Rumor has it (that's to say, I heard from a PCB supplier) that Cave will have Mushihime-sama 2 out some time the Jamma show in September. That would mean some type of official announcement perhaps a month before.

Well, I still think Progear was a lot more interessting than Ibaregga and Mushipachi.

The last original game Cave made wound up being... welll... not my cup of tea, to say the least. I don't see sequels as bad. None of their sequels has been a rehash. And it's not like their "new" games are really new. They almost all have to do with chaining, bullet-cancelling, or both. The general formula is to take the existing game, make tweaks, and add new gimmicks. I don't see how new characters which are arbitrary to gameplay make that much of a difference.

Themes hardly matter, Mushihimesama is definetly cool enough. It's foremost the chaining I'm sick of, I've never liked Cave-style chaining.

There's just a certain "freshness" about Cave's 98-2003 output, that I find lacking now.

Okay, so all their games revolve around chaining in one way or another, but each game used to be a really interesting new take on it, as well as a radical stylistic departure. Mushi is just a Hayao Miyazaki inspired DDP with babes, and Ibara is Garegga with babes.

...not that babes are a bad thing.

If I'm not mistaken, all games up to Ketsui I believe were designed by in-house developers. Technically Junya Inoue was not on the payroll for Progear, but I think he joined (briefly) soon after. This could have something to do with it. Not sure how they decide, but it's apparent they have a vision for each game, and go after designer than can fulfill it. It's not like all their games are sexy. ESPGaluda 2 is in fact very unsexy w/ those goofy ass characters.

I wonder if this one is going to be any easier than the original. I had a go at the PS2 port again after a few weeks of working on my scoring in ESP Galuda, and damn is it HARD! Compared to that craziness, Galuda is a piece of cake!
I still like the scoring gimmick on Maniac mode, though, and hope they keep something similar for the sequel.

I find Mushi's Maniac mode to be about on par with ESPGaluda. There's really only a few really shitty parts that are challenging w/o bombing. The beauty of ESPGaluda is that pattern memorization is used for high scoring, not survival, unlike some of Cave's other games (Ketsui, DOJ, etc.). Just practice... you'll get better. I bought the PCB, and after a solid weak of pounding it, I got a 1CC on maniac. I ahd played the PS2 version for a good few weeks when I got it, but never got passed stage 4.

I think it's practice. When I first got the game, I could consistently Gump my way through to the end of stage 3/beginning of 4, so it's just a matter of getting used to it again. I'm just getting so involved in working on a high score with Galuda that I'm not quite ready to tear myself away from it just yet--even though I'm only barely breaking 2 million in stage 1...

mrmonkeyman has a pretty nice no-miss up on his site which would be good for reference. My best score is a mere 39 mil. Never really got that great at it. I think my best score on stage 1 is 3.3 million, FYI.

Nah. I was just in Tokyo for two days about 10 days ago, and I've got a company trip to Vegas during the show, so it's totally out. Probably couldn't manage it anyway, unfortunately.

Cave will be offering Mushihime-sama Futari Limited T-Shirts at the AM Show next month. They don't flat out say it, but it's eluded to some type of raffle. For those that can't make the show, but are members of Geesen Yokocho, there will also be some other sort of method of attaining these shirts.

There are also some comments and a staff interview in the latest arcadia.

Hey GP, thanks for taking the time to post these pictures. I wrote a piece about Karous and Mushi on my site, and took the liberty of posting your images there (with proper acknowledgements and links, of course). I hope you are cool with this; if not, let me know.

After seeing that first tiny screenshot I lost my enthusiasm for this game... silly me. But now I am all excited again! What incredible colors, and that boss looks like a true Mushihime-sama boss. Reminds me of the first one in the original. In terms of character design, it was the best one in the whole game.

Anyway, I've got to find a way to get Arcadia even when I am not in Tokyo. The problem is I don't have a permanent address, which makes it hard to take out subscriptions...

The source is Kobayan, a pretty well known site dedicated to the arcade scene.

After reading your article (and agreeing on everything you mention about the sources, as you'll know), I'd suggest you to remove the Milestone naming thing from it. Milestone does very well know what they're doing.

Japanese love to play with naming ambiguity, you know. Rajirugi's actual romanji form is "Radirgy", not just because it comes from "radio" + "alergy", but because THEY wanted it to be so. It's up to them since the Japanese language allows that. It doesn't matter if they use the strict romanization "rajirugi" for its website's URL or whatever. That's just a direct transliteration, useful for that stuff. The same goes with "Karous". That's its official form. It's, most likely, a proper name Milestone has invented. With the kana, they just tell you how to pronounce it. In this case, it plays with the Japanese name for "crow", additionally.
