Metal Slug sounds fun, but I'd rather do something I can sit down and play for 10-15 minutes.

might not work for Metal Slug, but could limit other games to score over single levels, race games over single tracks for best lap time/best overal, etc etc...

I'm sure everyone here is honest enough to not fib about what they achieve, so that could work.

Like GP, the time available is so variable each day it's not easy to throw down a mass of time unfortunately.

Well, the PCB requires some tweaking due to the analog thingy. Maybe someone more versed w/ MAME could say whether it's doable or not.

In wolfmame 0.99, the analog settings match the SFC version (with a gamepad). Everything seems good to go, to me.

A belt-scroller sounds alright. I would rather do a Capcom one first, but then you'd have to pick from the huge list of CPS titles.

Actually, I've got one: Knights of the Round, 1991, CPS1. A belt-scroller with style.

All right, I'm feeling competitiony. What's everyone in the mood for? I wouldn't mind one of the top-view shooting games (Senjo no Ookami) but something much less popular. I played Magical Crystals for a few minutes last night, and it seemed fun enough. Any other candidates in that genre?

I'll also never turn down a good side scrolling jump action game (Chiki Chiki Boys, Raguy, Ninja Kid come to mind).

I'm up for all of those, but I can only play Battlefield properly (as it's the only PCB I have). Calibur 50 requires a special rotary stick, and I've got no SAR. Never tried them w/ button emulation. Something tells me I won't like them.

The idea behind the thread is to get maximum participation. It'd be nice to have 20 people participate, but I'd be happy with 5 competitive scores.

Looking up Magical Crystals at MAWS, and followign the category, I'd go for any of these:

Of those, I've got extensive experience w/ Alien Syndrome (got to the end of loop 2, and Crackdown (gotten to 2nd to las stage). Gain Ground is fucking hard, so doesn't matter what I've played. I have a Gunball super play DVD. It's almost an hour, so that would probably suck. Toki no Senshi is an oldie but a goodie. Never played FixEight... I'm sure it's hard as fuck.

If we went side scroller (which would mean I don't have to TATE my monitor, I'd be up for

My button config for rotary stick games on a standard stick is like this:

(1) (2) (3)
___(4)

1 - decrease dial
2 - button 1
3 - increase dial
4 - button 2

It works pretty great for all rotary games but I can totally understand if people would hate it - I've never used a real rotary stick before so never experienced the true thing.

All those side scrollers you've listed would be great except for Cadash. While Cadash is a superb game, its horrible for a competition due to the 30 minutes of milking in the green slime area.

My special vote goes to Bay Route or 'Rectal' Horn......!?

Lets try for a comp again? Its been soooooooooo long since I competed in arcade action games outside of street fighter.

My suggestions are Thunder Fox and Bay Route. Both totally awesome games with a number of bizzare similarities to each other. I've also had very little experience in both.

I don't know either game but I vote Thunder Fox because of burly men. AIRPLANES AND STUNT BIKES DON'T DO IT FOR ME BAY ROUTE.

My vote goes to Thunder Fox due to the fact that I just had a serious credit in Bay Route and got to the last boss (I had a few boss strategies I remembered for way back when I last played it a few times though)

Bay Route wouldn't necessarily be bad for a comp though, there is a lot of high risk milking that could be done in the last 2 stages by destroying those damn annoying satellites. In the run I had I was lucky enough to get max blue capsules and lots of greens to fill the health bar up, and I just just ran past all the satellite things with enough health to get me through.
