[AC] Last Survivor

Postby Shou » Thu Aug 02, 2012 11:05 am

For PCBs, this is one of the rarest Sega games and I've checked with both Mak and Try, neither have seen a board in the last decade.

Took a quick video of the attract sequence without sound (not sure which dip enables it!). You may notice that it uses a kind of rotary stick where the ball is able to rotate to change your view.

Yes, it is currently being dumped. :)

Marvellous. Try switch 2 or 3 on row B for the attract sound, the other X-Boards tend to use one of those. Amazing that you could have up to eight players at once. Good job!

Looks like it might be a challenge to work out the pinouts for the controls though.

Is Desert Breaker also this rare or a bit more common?

Awesome. I had always assumed the board would be better then the FM Towns port, but I never expected the walls to be so much higher then on the Towns. Looks a lot smoother too. ;)

I've asked the MAME guys to see if they can figure it out because none of the controls on my After Burner/Thunder Blade harness work outside of coin and test but would expect the controls to not work since they are coming from the analog connector.

The Japanese version is not as rare as Last Survivor but still very very uncommon (I've only seen 2 in the last few years). No shop that I've been to has any documentation on Desert Breaker.

I haven't played the Towns version in over a decade. How do you actually turn your character? Is it hold down one of the buttons and hit left/right?

Yes, that would be normal. The biggest problem is that the connector for the controls may need 5V and Ground connections, but guessing in this case and randomly connecting power may break the board. As I mentioned to you about Thunder Blade, the 5V going to the controls' connector also powers the sound. I suppose the easiest(?) way would be to use a multimeter to look for connectivity with a chip's pin that you know needs 5V.

It took me most of a Saturday and Sunday to connect up my Out Run when it was my first time with a Sega board like that, because I had to guess so much.

Oddly enough, the flyer isn't all that rare. Can donate it once it makes it's way into Mame, if a good scan of it doesn't already exist.

There's one on the Arcade Flyer Archive already as it happens.

Correct. Hold down a button to turn, otherwise you strafe with left and right. The graphics definitely took a big hit, but still a great port for it's time. Even supports 4-players via serial crossover cable, or 2-players via direct dial modem. Quite nice considering it was released in '91 a few years before Doom.

Should've bolded "good quality". A lot of those up there are decent but not printable.

Well that was fast.

Considering X Board was already emulated, should just be plug and play after dumping all of the files. I dumped the network board EPROM over the weekend and submitted it as well so someday in the future, we may have 8 player Last Survivor.

Here it is for everyone to enjoy and preserved for posterity.

I've dumped my other X Board games as well so all are now dumped except for Japan Racing Hero.

I got three X-board games today, though only one works at all. I got two GP Riders, one is dead and the other has graphical issues. I also got a dead Thunder Blade, but it's the unencrypted version, so it's a good backup for my encrypted PCB. I also have a dead After Burner, it looks like the problem on all of them is the custom chips.

I'm visiting Tokyo soon so am contemplating bringing them in for repair, but it just takes so long... still waiting since last October for two games I thought would be easy to repair.

I can revive all of the X Board games if you need help. Thunder Blade is a fairer game on the unencrypted version which is the JP version so I'd recommend changing it over. :P

I've been waiting over a year on almost 10 boards sent for repair with Mak....I use Try for repairs now and only have 1 board (Line of Fire, another X Board lol)outstanding with them butI only dropped that off a week ago.

The two After Burners are ok for the 68000's, as they're not encrypted, but the one that doesn't work is the undumped US version of the upgrade from After Burner to II, so I'm not entirely sure which ROMs are missing (I think three are missing).

The encrypted Thunder Blade is perfect, and a quick swap tells me that the unencrypted EPROMs are ok and will work on this board. I don't know where the problem is on the board though.

One of the GP Rider's FD1094 is dead, I swapped them to check. One is ok, but as I said the graphics are corrupted. I think the damage is to one of the custom graphics chips.

I also have an Enduro Racer, which also has similar graphics problems. I thought the problem was with one of the small boards but swapping it with one from Space Harrier made no difference.

The GP Riders are US versions, do you have unencrypted EPROMs for that version?

I was thinking of bringing the boards down and basically asking for two or three of them to be repaired, with spare parts coming from the others. Maybe tomorrow I'll swap around chips on each board to see if I can get anything.

I'll be going to Try in future then! I should be down in September, it's far too hot at the moment.
