NMK is quickly becoming one of my favorite companies. Their games are either truly fantastic, or are in that "so bad it's good" category. I think Gunnail is my favorite overall so far. Anyone have a complete list of their games? This site http://www.higenekodo.jp/untiku/nmk.htm looks fairly extensive, but no mention of the UPL games. I have a Strahl pcb and it's covered in NMK chips.

Also is it possible to convert a Ninja Gaiden or something into a Riot with home burned roms? Would love to play that on real hardware, but an original is about as rare as it gets.

Yeah, always been one of my favorite arcade companies. Not sure if I would really say some of their games are 'so bad their good' though, my least liked title is probably operation ragnarok but even that is competently enough made when compared to the true crap of the arcade. Black Heart is probably the most amateurish of all their releases but even that is ridiculously fun and charming.

Psychic 5 is easily their masterpiece and my favorite. Maken Densetsu is a cool Wonderboy in Monster Land style action rpg-ish game (I probably like more than Wonderboy) and when is comes to the shooting games I think Rapid Hero and P47 are amazing, and also love their rougher stuff like Thunder Dragon and Macross.

I'm certain Strahl is developed by UPL, not NMK.

Special mention to the unreleased (but readily playable) Riot which is one of the best cabal style action games, and gets major extra points for the hilarious running gag of the main character constantly falling through insane shit but surviving.

Superdeadite, hasn't proto's of Riot been easily available on YAJ for the last few years for only like 15,000Y?

I've never been completely sure on who created Strahl, but it uses NMK hardware for sure. I assume by "proto" you mean bootleg? I was under the impression that only like 7 legit Riot boards were ever produced. A fully working boot would be fine with me, anyone got the proper Japanese name for a yahoo search? :)

I'd like to get a USAAF Mustang but damn it's a pricey one. Kanaya got one in a few weeks ago, asked like 57,000 and it already sold. :o

I don't have much experience with NMK but I really like their Macross II shooting game with it's heavy emphasis on time-attack.
There aren't many score centric horizontal shooting games in the first place and I think it's the only caravan-mode game in arcades.

I paid that same guy nearly double that for the PCB a few years ago. :(

You mean Rapid Hero :)

Only 2 NMK shooters I am missing are Rapid Hero and Mustang...also the 2 most expensive it seems.

So I take it that Riot is a boot then? For a game of this rarity a boot is fine with me though. :)
A buddy sent me mp3 soundtracks for both Strahl and Mustang if anyone wants them. They are the proper pcb soundtracks, not the messed up mame shit. Mustang is badass, fuck I need to get one of these boards at some point.

Not a boot that I can see. This seller actually used to run a PCB shop back in the day called Capricorn and obviously has a lot of Tecmo's leftover arcade stock since he has had location test versions of Gun Nail and Solomon's Key up before.

Gomora and Strahl both listed as NMK in the book? Maybe they were collaborations with UPL? The ex-UPL staff site shows concept art they did for the games http://upl-gravedigger.boo.jp/top.html

Oh man, guess I wont be getting a Rapid Hero pcb for a while. What does Black Heart usually run? I always estimated that would be the most expensive title form NMK due to its obscurity.

I really want to properly play Hacha Mecha Fighter eventually too, its still totally fucked in mame.

Rapid Hero shows up maybe once a year?

G Front usually has a Black Heart up on Yahoo for 35k. Other shops will likely charge another 10k.

Wow, Psychic 5 AND Argus are both by NMK? Even more reason to love 'em. Argus is really unique. Psychic 5's scoring i too complicated for me though, I only went for the clear back when this was in the arcades...

I wonder how the loke test version of Solomon's Key was different... Maybe some stage was broken and too easy to clear. :)

Here's a video I shot of Hacha Mecha Fighter recently: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kaVwKz1gp6M no actual gameplay for reasons quite obvious. This game is so great, it's manic as hell from stage 2 already, has medal collecting (a banana dropping monkey) that can really make or break your score, fun boss milking but insane rank that unfortunately doesn't seem to lower as you die.

Got in my Riot pcb. Thanks for the help GP. :) Now I'm trying to figure out if mine is a bootleg or not lol.

The board looks totally legit, proper Tecmo hardware, no weird chips anywhere. Looks totally machine soldered, But there is one difference with the MAME Rom at least. On the title screen it only displays "1 Coin 1 Credit". It is missing the "Copyright NMK 1992" line the mame dump has. In fact there is no mention of NMK anywhere... Normally this would scream boot to me, but in this case wouldn't a boot just use the freely available mame roms meaning the extra text would show up? Who would actually hack the roms to remove the one line of text on a game that was never officially released? There is only one ROM version dumped right?

Shou you got yours from the same seller, does yours have the NMK line or not? Could mine be some weird loketest board where they kept the dev hidden? The instruction cards (copies) don't say NMK or any company on them either.

Boot or not this game is awesome, insanely hard though, but fun. ;)

How does the ROM-board look like.. photo please :D
You can convert Final Starforce PCB to Riot by swapping roms and that is probably what happened in this case.

the Riot pcb I have shows NMK 1992:

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/29938468/Internet/L1080395.JPG

I bought it off ebay Germany some years ago, saw another one shortly after also from a European seller. Those weren't sold by collectors, so I guess the game got somehow released in Europe in minimal quantities.

I recently got hold of an original Psychic 5 pcb. It seems to be a different version than featured in Mame, though, it's got the difficulty toned down. Enemies i.e. die after fewer hits and some obstacles are removed. It's not a dipswitch thing I think, I messed with those briefly.

That sounds like "set 2" in MAME, does it have western names instead of Japanese ones (Tommy and Linda etc.)? I had both versions, the easier one makes getting the special bonuses harder because of how the enemies can be killed with one hit.

Mine is in storage so don't have immediate access to it and I won't be digging anything out of there for the next few weeks. The instructions (if they're the same as mine) are ones someone hand made it seems. Maybe try the dips to see if it changes regions?

Yes the dip sheet was drawn by hand. The dips don't have any region changes. Here's a pic of the ROM board, the chips look different from the MAME board, but the surface mounted chips are machine soldered for sure. Way to clean for any human to do.

From all the evidence, my belief is that my board is a real Japanese loke-test or proto version. As stated there are quite a few Europeans who own the one that says NMK and the Mame dump board came from Germany. So I believe Riot was sold commercially in Europe. And my board is legit.

I was playing Bombjack Twin today, it's still as difficult as ever. I've found I can do reasonably well by setting my second button to autofire and then using that to glide around, with the first fire button just for initial jumping. There are definite patterns to be found which make each round straightforward, but did they have to make the enemies so numerous and aggressive?
